Like the Fox Renard Model 41, the Fox Renard Model 51 provides aspiring players with a highly playable instrument that offers an ideal balance of durability, practicality, and affordability. Made from molded polypropylene, the Model 51 is tough enough to withstand daily travel to and from school, and it’s suitable for both indoor and outdoor performances. Like all of the company’s instruments, the Model 51 possesses exemplary keywork courtesy of Fox’s expert craftspeople and assemblers. But unlike the comparable Model 41, the Model 51 comprises a unique short-reach key configuration that’s tailor-made for small hands. Double reed players at Sweetwater appreciate Fox’s thoughtful touches such as providing two C bocals, a seat strap, and a cleaning cloth and swabs. High-quality appointments — such as a white synthetic ivory bell ring, a body lock, and nickel-silver water tubes — round out this fantastic bassoon, making it a great alternative to the Model 41 for small-handed students who can’t quite navigate full German system keywork.

Made from durable molded polypropylene
The Model 51 student bassoon features a durable body made from molded polypropylene, which is resistant to normal wear and tear and damage due to temperature changes and humidity fluctuations, and it’s easy to maintain. This high-quality student instrument features a German bell accented by an attractive white synthetic ivory ring, and it’s equipped with a body lock. Additionally, nickel-silver water tubes extend into the bore to prevent moisture from accumulating in the tone holes.
Silver-plated short-reach key system
Fox pours their heart into their keywork, and it shows. Beyond offering a plethora of key options, Fox plates their keys in-house, and every key is hand mounted by their team of expert assemblers. The Model 51 student bassoon offers a beginner-friendly short-reach key configuration, which includes a short-reach plateau key for the left-hand ring finger and rollers for the right little finger F and Ab and the left little finger Eb and Db. In order to accommodate small hands, Fox removed the right Bb trill, right-thumb Ab, and right-hand C#, which are rarely necessary for beginner to intermediate-level playing anyway.
