Our mothers deserve to be celebrated. They brought us into the world, cleaned our bottoms and supported our dreams. With Mother’s Day less than two weeks away (not that you would forget, right?) we wanted to give people the opportunity to give their moms a shout-out. So we took to social media with a question: How has your mom helped you on your musical journey? Here’s what you came up with.
Thai Shes always supported me playing music. I remember when my father smashed my white stratocaster. And then i was guitarless, so she said we wont tell your dad just go on the computer and ill pay for it. I remember getting this beautiful lake placid blue mexican strat with a black pickguard. Love you mom! Thank you for being who you are.
Roger My mom supported me 100% She bought me my first acoustic and electric guitars and then my first bass. She believed in me when my dad thought it was a waste of time. He eventually came around and was proud of my accomplishments.
Tim She bought me Pink Floyd The Wall when I was 10 for Easter. Took her to see Roger Waters do The Wall like 28 years later. Had a full circle moment.
Mark Trombone lessons when I was in junior high with PLU Prof. Roger Gard!!! And a new trombone, way back in 1982!
Geoff My mom taught me how to sing harmony on drives home from grandma and grandpa’s house after Sunday dinners. My dad would sing “somewhere in the basement,” with my mom on the melody, and me and my sister and brother singing harmony. She gave me her French horn to play in the school band, bought me a French horn when I started playing seriously, paid for piano and French horn lessons, bought me an acoustic guitar in high school, came to some of my shows (acoustic and the bands I was in), asked me to play and sing at family gatherings and always encouraged me.
Roy My mom sang the old songs she learned in Oklahoma and Texas. You Are My sunshine was her favorite
Dan A very talented classical pianist. But liked rock and roll too. She had no problem with me taking up drums despite the noise I made learning. 😀
Hilary Well, my mom was born to Ted Brown of Ted Brown Music, so when I asked for a flute for the first day of band in the 5th grade, she brought me one home from work that day!
Angela Piano lessons, paying for things I needed, driving me to concerts and marching band rehearsals. Always attending performances (she still comes to my symphony gigs and I’m 46 years old.)
Gail She let me avoid dishes by practicing. I thought I was outsmarting her. What a joke.
Andy She bought me my first Yamaha Music USA acoustic in 1977!
